Healthy Fruit Protein Smoothie (Vegan Option)

Protein immediately following a workout and throughout the day is critical in refueling your body with the key building blocks to promote a healthy lifestyle. The ease of preparing smoothies allows for a nutrient dense drink to be prepared in a blender within minutes and squeezed into nearly any busy schedule.

This smoothie recipe includes the highly nutritious foods chia seeds and flaxseeds. This recipe can easily be converted into a vegan recipe by replacing the Greek yogurt with a plant based dairy-free yogurt such as So Delicious or Silk yogurt.

Chia seeds are considered a super food packing 6 grams of protein, 8 grams of fiber (30% RDI), 9 grams of fat (5 grams of Omega-3), and nearly 1/4 of your recommended intake of calcium, manganese, magnesium, and phosphorus into the 28 gram serving size (2 tablespoons). It is loaded with free radical fighting antioxidants that are believed to reduce aging and combat cancer. Also a non-GMO, gluten free, and low carb food with only 1 gram of digestible carbs.

Flaxseeds complement chia seeds similar to how Robin complements Batman in its nutritional complexity. A serving size (2 tablespoons) contains 4 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber, and 6 grams of fat (3 grams of Omega-3). Both chia seeds and flax seeds help to lower cholesterol by binding to LDL (bad) cholesterol before being removed from the blood by the liver.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup fruit (fresh, canned, or frozen)
  • 1/2 cup ice (water if using frozen fruit)

Directions: Add fruit, yogurt, and liquids first. Next, place chia seeds and milled flaxseed in blender last to prevent ingredients from sticking to the side of the blender container. Blend ingredients on HIGH for 30 seconds. Pour and enjoy!
